3/12 of #top12 #2025 Long-tailed macaque’s dominance display glows in rim light at dusk
I got inspired, so I decided to select my Top 12 photos of 2025. Some of them I selected because I liked the photo, and others because of the experience of taking them, but for all of them it is a way to remember some of the places I have visited and, mostly, the people I have met along the way.
I visited Sabah, Malaysia, again this year, and I still love going there, even though there seems to be less forest every time. The destruction of the landscape and wildlife is more noticeable on each visit, though I am not sure whether it is actually worse than elsewhere or just feels that way because I have been there so often.
One of the places I visited was Tawau Hills Park, where I watched a troop of long‑tailed macaques make their way to a hanging bridge every evening at sunset. I was drawn to the way this young male perched on a wooden pole, baring his teeth at the rest of the troop in a clear display of dominance. For me, it is the rim lighting and dark profile that make the portrait.
